Business versus holiday tourism
The tourism industry comprises two main business areas: business and holiday tourism.
Business tourism is the industry's fastest growing business area. It covers everything from accommodation, attractions and transportation to marketing, and includes business meetings, international congresses and conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs, study trips and incentive travel. The main objective of business tourism is – business. By way of contrast, the main objectives of holiday tourism are recreation and relaxation. Holiday tourism can be divided into three main areas: coastal tourism, urban tourism and active holidays.
The average duration of holiday trips is decreasing. The ‘new’ tourist wants a quality vacation with nice facilities, perfect weather, delicious food, activities and entertainment. At the same time, holidays should offer a unique and personalised experience, full of surprises. Countries, cities and tourist attractions need to provide an exceptional product, centred on the individual traveller – even if the tourist has purchased a standardised holiday package.
